Sri Lankans in Australia 2025: A DreamShift Deep Dive

Table of Contents

Every Sri Lankan family has that one cousin who suddenly disappeared from the WhatsApp group in 2013 and reappeared in 2024 saying, “Macho, I’m in Aussie now, life is good no?”
Well, turns out, they’re not alone.

According to the latest data from Australia’s Department of Home Affairs, there are now 158,090 Sri Lankans living in Australia, which is a massive 43% increase since 2013, and that’s a whole mini-Sri Lanka casually relocating Down Under. And with those numbers, Sri Lankans officially became the 11th largest migrant community in Australia as of 2024.
Not bad for a tiny island that can fit inside New South Wales five times.

But let’s break this down the DreamShift way, because our team member Navodya loves numbers more than most Sri Lankans love cricket and that’s saying something.

The Rise of the Sri Lankan Skilled Migrants

Between 2020 and 2024 alone:
15,192 Sri Lankans entered Australia through skilled migration programs.
This puts Sri Lankans as the 6th largest community in the Skilled Employment Visa category.

Honestly, if there was a World Cup for skilled migration, we’d probably end up in the semifinals.

And where do these skilled professionals end up?
Here’s the breakdown of where Sri Lankan skilled workers live:

  • NSW – 30%
  • Victoria – 28%
  • Queensland – 23%
  • Western Australia – 10%
  • South Australia – 4%
  • Tasmania – 2%
  • Northern Territory – 2%
  • ACT – 2%

So basically, if you throw a kotthu roti across Melbourne, you will statistically hit another Sri Lankan. But don’t! It’s a waste of kottu in this economy.

What Jobs Are Sri Lankans Actually Doing?

Despite what your aunty thinks (“He’s gone to Aussie to drive Uber, no?”), Sri Lankans are now deeply rooted in a range of professional fields:

  • Healthcare – 670
  • Chefs & Cooks – 465
  • Mechanics – 400
  • Accountants – 365
  • IT & Tech – 558
  • Engineering – 339
  • Education – 224

In short, we’re cooking the food, fixing the cars, teaching the kids, running the networks, balancing the books, and saving lives.
If we stop working, the country might very politely collapse a little.

The Student statistics: Where Sri Lankans Study in Australia

Many Sri Lankans consider sending their children into Australia for their higher education as an investment. Today we’re not going to evaluate how true or right that statement is, but we do have the latest statistics.

From 2020 to 2024:

32,549 Sri Lankan students were granted student visas.
That makes us the 11th largest student visa community in Australia in 2024.

Where do they study?

  • Victoria – 54% (obviously, Melbourne is basically Maharagama with better transport)
  • Queensland – 12%
  • Western Australia – 12%
  • New South Wales – 10%
  • South Australia – 8%
  • Tasmania – 2%
  • ACT – 1%

If Melbourne universities had a loyalty card for Sri Lankans, half the country would be getting free coffee by now.

Cultural Crossovers

Now here’s where things get really interesting.

The moment a Sri Lankan lands in Australia, something magical happens.
They become more Sri Lankan than ever before.

Suddenly they develop deep emotional attachments to curry leaves, red rice, and Maliban biscuits. And amidst all this cultural mixing, Sri Lankans and Australians bond shockingly well.
Both love tea.
Both love complaining about the weather.
Both secretly enjoy gossip.

It’s a perfect match.

So Why Are Sri Lankans Really Moving to Australia?

Let’s be honest.

Sri Lankans move for:

  • Opportunity
  • Better living standards
  • Higher salaries
  • A stable future for their families

But also because every uncle knows another uncle who says, “Just come, machan. Jobs are plenty.”

The truth?
It’s a tough process.
The paperwork is intense.
The waiting is intense.
The emotional rollercoaster is… also intense.

But the payoff?
Worth it.
